BEST TREATMENT FOR BLADDER CANCER

The laparoscopic procedure

offers several potential

advantages over open

surgery.

What is Bladder Cancer?

Within the body, cells normally grow in an orderly fashion. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells that have forgotten how to function properly. The term cancer also refers to when cells have become malignant. Bladder cancer involves a “malignant” or “cancerous” growth or tumor in the urinary bladder. Additional tests are usually required to determine if the cancer has spread out of the bladder.

WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR BLADDER CANCER?

The treatment for bladder cancer depends on your individual type of bladder cancer. A radical cystectomy is done in an attempt to cure your cancer that has invaded the bladder wall or has come back following initial treatment, or has a high chance of spreading. At this point in your disease, your surgeon has recommended you have removal of your bladder. Some patients may have chemotherapy before or after they have their bladder removed. Your bladder has to be surgically removed to take out the cancer.

WHAT IS LAPAROSCOPIC RADICAL CYSTECTOMY?

Laparoscopic cystectomy is a form of “minimally invasive” surgery. In traditional surgery, the incisions are large enough for the surgeon’s hands to enter the patient’s body and manipulate the instruments. In minimally invasive surgery, the incisions are tiny, and the surgeon’s hands never enter the patient’s body. Instead, tiny instruments held by the surgeon are inserted into the small incisions. They have mini-cameras attached to them, so the surgeons can see what they’re doing on video monitors. Compared to traditional surgery, minimally invasive surgery may lead to less post-operative pain and smaller scars.

WHAT IS ROBOT-ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPIC RADICAL CYSTECTOMY WITH ILEAL CONDUIT?

“Robot-assisted” means the tiny surgical instruments, inserted into the small incisions, are held by robotic arms. The surgeon controls their movements by using a computerized system called the da Vinci® Surgical System. It is currently the most advanced robotic technology for doing this type of surgery. The urologists at University Urology are among the nation’s leaders in pioneering and practicing robot-assisted laparoscopic cystectomy, using the da Vinci® Surgical System. They were among the first in the country to establish a robotic prostatectomy program as well. As in traditional laparoscopic surgery, mini-cameras on the instruments send images to video monitors. These images are larger than life, magnified many times, allowing the surgery to be extremely precise. In fact, the surgeon sees three-dimensional images. In short, they give your doctor the ability to do a successful, curative surgery with the least amount of side effects.
