Bariatric surgery has become more prevalent owing to the worldwide obesity epidemic. With the growing number of bariatric procedures performed annually, the requirement for revisional and secondary operations is increasing accordingly.
Revision weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed on patients who have already undergone a form of bariatric surgery, and have either had complications from such surgery or have not successfully achieved significant weight loss results from the initial surgery.
As the number of bariatric procedures performed increases, the number of patients requiring revisional procedures continues to rise. Aside from revisional procedures to manage early surgical complications, many patients require a redo operation months or years after the primary surgery for various reasons including insufficient weight loss or weight regain, delayed complications associated with implants, or other intolerable side effects. Revisional bariatric surgery comprises 5%-15% of total cases of bariatric surgery
