What is adult circumcision?

Adult circumcision is surgery to remove the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the head of the penis. The surgeon removes a measured band of skin and inner lining, and then closes the edges with fine dissolving stitches.

Usually, men choose it for a medical problem such as a tight foreskin or repeated infections. Others choose it for religious, cultural or personal reasons. In Istanbul, the operation takes 30 to 45 minutes, and most men fly home after three to four days.

Unlike infant circumcision, an adult operation lets you decide how the result looks. So Assoc. Prof. Taş plans the cut line with you before surgery.

Which question brought you here?

Most men ask one of five things before adult circumcision. So pick the closest one and jump straight to the answer.

  1. Do I have a medical reason for it?

  2. Which technique will be used?

  3. Can I choose how it looks?

  4. How long is recovery?

  5. How much does it cost in Turkey?

reasons

Medical reasons for circumcision in men

Many adult operations treat a real foreskin problem. In fact, the NHS lists several conditions where circumcision is the usual answer once creams and hygiene fail.

  • Phimosis: the foreskin is too tight to pull back, so erections, sex or cleaning hurt.

  • Paraphimosis: a pulled-back foreskin gets stuck and swells, which needs urgent care.

  • Recurrent balanitis: repeated redness and infection of the head of the penis and foreskin.

  • Lichen sclerosus: a skin disease that scars and tightens the foreskin, also called BXO.

  • Short or tearing frenulum: the band under the head tears or bleeds during sex.

  • Splits and cracks: small tears in the foreskin that keep coming back.

Personal, religious and cultural reasons

Some men were not circumcised as boys and now want it for faith, family or a partner. Others prefer the look, or they find hygiene easier afterwards. These are valid reasons, and the planning is the same.

When a smaller operation may be enough

Not every foreskin problem needs full removal. For example, a tight frenulum alone may only need a frenuloplasty, and early phimosis may respond to a steroid cream. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Taş first checks whether a smaller step will solve your problem.

techniques

Adult circumcision techniques

All good techniques share one aim: a neat, even line with the right amount of skin. However, the tools differ, and the table compares the common methods.

Sleeve resection

How it works: Two marked cuts remove a ring of skin, then stitches join the edges

Best suited to: Men who want a precise, planned line

Forceps-guided

How it works: A clamp holds the foreskin while the surgeon cuts along it

Best suited to: Simple cases with a normal foreskin

Dorsal slit first

How it works: A short opening on top frees a tight foreskin before removal

Best suited to: Severe phimosis or scarring

Thermocautery-assisted

How it works: A heated tip cuts and seals small vessels at the same time

Best suited to: Lower bleeding and a dry field

Stapler or ring device

How it works: A disposable device cuts and closes in one step

Best suited to: Selected men, with device costs added

In practice, Assoc. Prof. Taş combines a marked sleeve-type cut with thermocautery for bleeding control. He co-authored a published review of thermocautery-assisted circumcision in a very large series. Furthermore, his own study looked at how stitches and bleeding control affect scar quality.

Why careful stitching matters

That study found that heavy cautery and too many stitches can leave a wrinkled scar line. As a result, he uses fine absorbable sutures and only as much heat as the tissue needs.

styles

Planning the result: high, low, tight or loose

An adult can choose the look in advance, which a baby cannot. So the first visit includes a frank talk about the cut line and the amount of skin.

Low scar line

What it means: The scar sits close to the head of the penis

What men notice: Less inner lining stays, and the look is cleaner

High scar line

What it means: The scar sits further down the shaft

What men notice: More inner lining stays, and some men keep more feeling

Tight style

What it means: More skin removed, little movement left

What men notice: The head stays fully exposed at rest

Loose style

What it means: Less skin removed, more movement left

What men notice: Skin may partly cover the head at rest

Frenulum kept

What it means: The band under the head stays in place

What men notice: Many men prefer this for sensation

However, very tight results can make erections feel pulled. That is why he marks the skin with the penis stretched, not at rest. You can see healed examples on the adult circumcision gallery page.

Is adult circumcision right for you?

Most healthy men can have the operation safely. Still, some health points change the plan or the timing.

  • Good candidates: men with phimosis, repeated infections or a clear personal wish.

  • Plan with care: men with diabetes, because sugar control affects healing.

  • Wait first: men with an active infection, which should clear before surgery.

  • Tell the team: men on blood thinners, because some need a pause first.

  • Different operation: men with a curved penis or a buried penis may need a combined plan.

If an earlier circumcision left a poor result, the plan is different again. Read the circumcision revision surgery page instead.

Your adult circumcision in Istanbul

The whole process fits into a short trip. Moreover, you agree every step with Assoc. Prof. Taş before the day of surgery.

01

Consultation and examination

First, he examines the foreskin and asks about infections, medicines and your wishes. Then you agree on the technique and the cut style together.

02

Anaesthesia

Next, most men have a local anaesthetic block, so they stay awake but feel no pain. Alternatively, you can have sedation or a general anaesthetic if you prefer.

03

The operation

Then he marks the skin, removes the foreskin and seals small vessels with thermocautery. Finally, fine dissolving stitches close the edge, and a light dressing goes on.

04

Same-day discharge and check

Usually, you go back to your hotel the same day. Before you fly, he checks the wound and the stitch line.

Preparing for the day

  • Smoking: stop a few weeks before, because it slows wound healing.

  • Shaving: no need to shave at home, since the team trims hair if needed.

  • Eating: eat normally before a local anaesthetic, but fast for six hours before sedation.

  • Company: bring a companion if you choose sedation, so you do not travel alone.

How long to stay in Istanbul

Plan three to four days in the city. As a result, the first wound check happens before your flight home.

recovery

Adult circumcision recovery, week by week

Recovery is usually simple, but it takes longer than most men expect. Typically, the timeline looks like this.

  • Days 1 to 3: swelling and soreness, eased by simple pain relief and loose underwear.

  • Days 2 to 3: you remove the dressing and start short, gentle showers.

  • Week 1: desk work and walking are fine, while swelling slowly settles.

  • Weeks 2 to 3: the dissolving stitches fall out on their own.

  • Weeks 4 to 6: sex and masturbation usually become comfortable again.

Erections during healing

Night-time erections can pull on the stitches in the first week. So empty your bladder before sleep, and wear snug briefs to reduce the tug.

Wound care at home

Keep the area clean with plain water, and pat it dry gently. Also, a thin layer of the prescribed ointment stops the wound sticking to your underwear. Call the team if redness spreads, pus appears or bleeding does not stop with light pressure.

Return to sport and travel

Gym training and running can usually start after about three weeks. Meanwhile, a long flight a few days after surgery is fine, as long as you walk around the cabin.

Risks of adult circumcision

Serious problems are uncommon after adult circumcision. Even so, you should know the possible risks before you decide.

  • Bleeding: usually minor, and careful vessel sealing keeps it low.

  • Infection: uncommon, and good wound care at home helps prevent it.

  • Swelling: the inner lining often swells for a few weeks.

  • Change in sensation: the exposed head may feel more sensitive at first, then settles.

  • Uneven or wrong skin amount: too much or too little skin removed, which careful marking prevents.

  • Scar problems: a lumpy or wrinkled scar line, sometimes linked to heavy stitching.

Moreover, a poor result can usually be improved later with revision surgery. That is why the first operation deserves careful planning.

cost

How much does adult circumcision cost in Turkey?

Assoc. Prof. Taş gives each patient a personal written quote after the consultation. That is because the anaesthesia choice, any frenulum work and the facility change the price.

Adult circumcision, local anaesthetic

Istanbul, Assoc. Prof. Taş: Personal written quote

United States: Often $1,500 to $4,000 self-pay

United Kingdom (private): Often £1,500 to £3,000

With sedation or general anaesthetic

Istanbul, Assoc. Prof. Taş: Personal written quote

United States: Higher, with facility fees

United Kingdom (private): Higher, with hospital fees

With frenuloplasty

Istanbul, Assoc. Prof. Taş: Personal written quote

United States: Varies by insurer and facility

United Kingdom (private): Varies by clinic

Your quote covers the surgeon fee, the facility, anaesthesia and the follow-up check. In addition, the coordinator arranges airport transfers and hotel booking.

Does insurance pay for it?

In the US, insurers may cover adult circumcision for phimosis or repeated balanitis, but rarely for personal reasons. Similarly, the NHS usually funds it only with a medical need.

Travelling from the US, Canada or the UK

Many men travel because NHS waits are long or US self-pay prices are high. Also, some men prefer privacy away from home.

Before you fly

  • Bring a list of your medicines, especially blood thinners.

  • Bring loose trousers and snug cotton briefs for the trip home.

  • Tell the team about diabetes, because blood sugar affects healing.

Back home

You leave with wound care instructions and a written summary in English. Afterwards, the team follows up with you by video call during healing.
