What does erectile dysfunction treatment involve?

Erectile dysfunction, or ED, means you often cannot get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. Treatment ranges from tablets and shockwave therapy to injections and a penile implant. However, the right choice depends on the cause, not on what worked for a friend.

ED is common. In fact, US research suggests that 30 to 50 million American men have it. Yet many men try tablet after tablet for years without a single test.

So this page works as a map. First, it shows how Assoc. Prof. Taş finds the cause. Then it explains which option fits which cause, what each one costs and how long you need in Istanbul.

Which situation brings you here?

by-cause

Which treatment fits which cause?

An erection needs healthy arteries, veins that close, working nerves, normal hormones and a calm mind. When one link breaks, the treatment has to target that link. Here is how Assoc. Prof. Taş matches the plan to the cause.

Narrowed arteries

Typical sign: Smoker, diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol; erections fade slowly over years

Usual first plan: Tablets and risk-factor control, then shockwave; injections or implant if these fail

Venous leak

Typical sign: Erection starts but softens within moments

Usual first plan: Doppler test first, then targeted treatment or an implant

Nerve damage after prostate or pelvic surgery

Typical sign: ED began right after the operation

Usual first plan: Early rehabilitation with tablets or injections; implant if no recovery

Low testosterone

Typical sign: Low desire, tiredness, low blood level twice

Usual first plan: Monitored hormone treatment alongside other options

Peyronie's disease

Typical sign: A curve, a lump or pain during erections

Usual first plan: Curvature treatment; implant with straightening in severe cases

Stress or performance anxiety

Typical sign: Normal morning erections, problems only with a partner

Usual first plan: Counselling and short-term tablets, no surgery

Why tablets stop working

Tablets help the blood flow that is already there. So when arteries narrow further or the veins leak, the same dose no longer gives a firm result. At that point, a higher dose rarely solves the problem; a test does.

diagnosis

How Assoc. Prof. Taş finds the cause

Most of the work happens before any treatment starts. In fact, the first two days in Istanbul answer the question many men carry for years.

  • A focused history: when it started, morning erections, medicines, surgery and relationship context.

  • Blood tests: sugar, cholesterol, testosterone and prolactin, because ED often signals a hidden condition.

  • Penile Doppler ultrasound: an injection creates an erection, then ultrasound measures inflow and leak.

  • Examination: checks for a curve, a lump or a tight foreskin that affects the plan.

Read more about each test on the ED diagnosis page.

A warning sign for the heart

Erection arteries are narrower than heart arteries, so they often block first. As a result, ED can appear years before chest pain. That is why the blood tests matter as much as the erection itself.

options

The six treatment options, compared

Treatment starts with the least invasive option that suits your cause. Then, if one step is not enough, a proven next step follows.

Oral tablets

How it works: Boost blood flow when you are aroused

Best suited to: Mild to moderate ED, most first-time patients

Time in Istanbul: Consultation and tests, 2 days

Low-intensity shockwave

How it works: Painless sessions that aim to grow new small vessels

Best suited to: Mild artery-related ED, men who want to rely less on tablets

Time in Istanbul: A course of sessions, planned with you

Penile injections

How it works: A fine needle gives an erection within minutes

Best suited to: Men who do not respond to tablets, nerve damage

Time in Istanbul: 2 to 3 days with training

Vacuum device

How it works: A pump draws blood in, a ring holds it

Best suited to: Men who prefer a drug-free option

Time in Istanbul: One visit with instruction

Hormone therapy

How it works: Corrects low testosterone under monitoring

Best suited to: Men with proven low levels

Time in Istanbul: Blood tests and plan, 2 days

Penile implant

How it works: A hidden device gives a firm erection on demand

Best suited to: Men for whom other options failed

Time in Istanbul: About 5 to 7 days

Shockwave therapy has its own page: shockwave treatment for ED. Men with a proven venous leak can also read about venous leak treatment.

Your first visit in Istanbul, step by step

Most men need two to three days for diagnosis and a non-surgical plan. If you choose an implant, the stay extends to about a week.

01

Private consultation

First, Assoc. Prof. Taş takes your history in person, in English and in private. Then he examines you and explains what he suspects. Finally, he orders only the tests that can change the plan.

02

Blood tests and Doppler

Next, a morning blood test checks sugar, lipids and hormones. Later the same day or the next, the Doppler ultrasound measures arterial inflow and venous leak.

03

Your written plan

He then goes through the results with you and writes a plan in order of steps. Also, it states what to try at home, when to judge the result and what comes next.

04

Treatment or follow-up

Depending on the plan, you start tablets, learn injections, begin shockwave or book an implant. Then you fly home with the reports and a follow-up schedule for your local doctor.

implant

When is a penile implant the right answer?

A penile implant suits men whose ED does not respond to tablets, injections or shockwave. It is also the fixed solution for severe venous leak, diabetes-related ED and ED after prostate surgery. Moreover, it works every time, because it does not depend on blood flow.

Three-piece inflatable (AMS 700, Coloplast Titan)

How it feels: Firm on demand, soft at rest; the most natural result

Guide price in Istanbul: $9,000 to $12,000

Inflatable (Rigicon Infla10)

How it feels: Firm on demand, soft at rest

Guide price in Istanbul: $6,000 to $11,000

Malleable rods

How it feels: Always firm, you bend it up or down

Guide price in Istanbul: $5,000 to $7,000

The operation takes 45 to 90 minutes through one small hidden incision, and most men go home the next day. For the full device guide, see penile implant surgery or the Coloplast Titan page.

ED after robotic prostate surgery

Erection problems are common after radical prostatectomy, even when the surgeon spares the nerves. The nerves recover slowly, often over one to two years. Meanwhile, the erectile tissue needs regular blood flow, or it scars and shortens.

Penile rehabilitation

So Assoc. Prof. Taş starts rehabilitation early, usually within weeks of the operation. First, a low daily tablet or regular injections keep the tissue oxygenated. Then, at fixed checks, he judges how much natural function returns.

If erections have not returned after a fair trial, an implant gives a reliable answer. In addition, men treated with robotic prostate cancer surgery receive this plan as part of their follow-up.

Steps that make every treatment work better

No treatment replaces healthy arteries. However, a few changes improve erections on their own and help every option work better.

  • Stop smoking: it damages the small arteries first, and erections often improve within months of quitting.

  • Move every day: regular brisk walking or cycling improves blood flow to the penis.

  • Control sugar and blood pressure: well-managed diabetes and blood pressure protect the remaining function.

  • Limit alcohol and sleep well: both affect hormones and the nerve signals behind an erection.

  • Review your medicines: some blood pressure and mood medicines affect erections, so ask before you stop any.

What are the risks of ED treatments?

Most ED treatments carry low and short-lived risks. Still, honest information helps you choose, so here is what to know for each step.

  • Tablets: headache, flushing or a blocked nose; never combine them with nitrate heart medicines.

  • Shockwave: mild redness at most, but results vary and fade in some men.

  • Injections: a small bruise; rarely, an erection lasting over four hours that needs urgent care.

  • Implant: infection or a mechanical fault that may need another operation years later.

cost

How much does ED treatment cost in Turkey?

Non-surgical treatment costs far less than surgery, with a quote based on your tests and steps. For implants, Assoc. Prof. Taş's guide prices start at $5,000. By comparison, the same devices cost $16,000 to $35,000 in the United States.

Questions to ask any clinic before ED treatment abroad

A good urologist welcomes these questions, so do not hold back. In fact, clear answers tell you more than any brochure.

  1. Will you test the cause before treating? A plan without blood tests or Doppler is a guess.

  2. Why this option for me? Ask how the treatment links to your specific cause.

  3. How will we judge if it works? A clear time frame avoids months of uncertain sessions.

  4. Who performs the implant, if I need one? Confirm the surgeon's own implant experience.

  5. What happens after I fly home? Make sure you have written reports and a direct contact.

Travelling from the US, Canada or the UK

Many men come because ED care at home feels slow, scattered or costly. Others simply want privacy far from their local clinic.

Before you fly

  • Bring any previous blood results and a list of the tablets and doses you have tried.

  • Bring a list of all your medicines, especially heart medicines and blood thinners.

  • If you have had prostate or pelvic surgery, bring the operation notes.

Waiting times at home

In England, the NHS often starts with tablets from a GP, and specialist tests can take months. Canadian and US men often face long waits or high bills for Doppler and implants. In Istanbul, by contrast, consultation, tests and the plan usually fit into two days.

Back home

Finally, you leave with test results and a step-by-step plan in English. So your family doctor can prescribe and follow up with full information. For implant travel details, read the guide for US and Canada patients.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most effective treatment for erectile dysfunction?

It depends on the cause. Tablets work for many men, while a penile implant gives the most reliable result when other options fail.

Can erectile dysfunction be cured?

Sometimes, yes. ED from stress, low testosterone or a medicine often improves once the cause is treated. Artery damage, however, usually needs ongoing care.

Why do my ED tablets no longer work?

Usually, the blood flow problem has progressed or the veins leak. A Doppler ultrasound shows which, and the plan changes accordingly.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

Plan for two to three days for diagnosis and a non-surgical plan. For a penile implant, plan for about five to seven days.

Is shockwave therapy a permanent fix for ED?

No. It can help mild artery-related ED, but results vary and may fade, so Assoc. Prof. Taş recommends it only for suitable men.

Do penile injections hurt?

Most men feel only a tiny prick, because the needle is very fine. The team trains you until you feel confident doing it yourself.

How much does a penile implant cost in Turkey?

With Assoc. Prof. Taş, guide prices run from $5,000 for malleable rods to $12,000 for a three-piece inflatable, stay included.

Will an implant change how sex feels?

Sensation, orgasm and ejaculation usually stay the same, because the implant only provides firmness. Most men also say it feels natural once healed.

Can ED be a sign of heart disease?

Yes. ED often appears years before heart symptoms, so blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure checks are part of every assessment.

Is my visit kept confidential?

Yes. Your consultation, tests and records stay private, and you decide what to share with your doctor at home.
