What is congenital penile curvature?

Congenital penile curvature is a bend that has been present since puberty. The erectile tissue is healthy, yet one side of its outer sheath grew longer than the other. So the penis bends towards the shorter side during an erection.

Surgery is the only treatment that straightens it. In most men, Assoc. Prof. Taş shortens the longer side with stitches, a technique called plication. As a result, published series report complete straightening in about 88 to 97 percent of men.

This page explains when correction makes sense, how each technique compares, and what a trip to Istanbul involves.

Which situation sounds like yours?

need-surgery

When does a congenital curve need surgery?

A slight bend is normal, and many men never need treatment. However, correction makes sense when the curve gets in the way of sex or causes real distress.

  • Penetration is difficult: the bend makes intercourse awkward, painful or impossible.

  • Your partner feels pain: a strong downward or sideways bend can hurt a partner.

  • The angle is large: most men who choose surgery have a bend of about 30 degrees or more.

  • It affects your confidence: some men avoid relationships because of the shape.

Why tablets, creams and traction do not help

Medicines for Peyronie's disease target scar plaques, and a congenital curve has no plaque. Likewise, traction devices cannot shorten the longer side of the sheath. So, for a true congenital bend, surgery remains the only lasting correction.

Which direction is most common?

A downward bend is the most common pattern, followed by a sideways bend. In contrast, an upward bend is less frequent. Some men also have a twist of the shaft, which the surgeon corrects at the same time.

peyronie-or-not

Congenital curve or Peyronie's disease?

The two conditions look alike in a photo, but they need different timing and techniques. So the first step is always to tell them apart.

When it starts

Congenital curvature: Noticed at puberty

Peyronie's disease: Appears in adult life, often after 40

Cause

Congenital curvature: Uneven growth of a healthy sheath

Peyronie's disease: Scar plaque in the sheath

Pain

Congenital curvature: No pain

Peyronie's disease: Often painful in the early phase

Change over time

Congenital curvature: Stable

Peyronie's disease: Can worsen for 6 to 12 months

Shape problems

Congenital curvature: Smooth bend, sometimes a twist

Peyronie's disease: Dents, hourglass narrowing, shortening

When to operate

Congenital curvature: Any time in adult life

Peyronie's disease: Only after 3 to 6 months of stability

If your curve appeared later in life, read the Peyronie's disease treatment page instead.

How Assoc. Prof. Taş plans your correction

A good result depends on accurate measurements before surgery. So the plan follows four clear steps in Istanbul.

01

Consultation and examination

First, Assoc. Prof. Taş asks when you noticed the curve and how it affects sex. Then he examines the penis at rest. He also checks the opening of the urethra, because some bends come with a hidden urethral problem.

02

Measured erection

Next, a fine injection produces a full erection in the clinic. He then measures the angle, the direction, any twist and your stretched length. These numbers decide the technique.

03

Choosing the technique

With healthy erections and a moderate bend, plication is usually the answer. However, a severe bend, a short penis or weak erections may change the plan. You hear the trade-offs before you agree to anything.

04

Surgery and discharge

The operation takes about one to two hours under general or spinal anaesthesia. Afterwards, you stay one night in hospital. Finally, he checks the wound before you fly home.

techniques

Nesbit, plication and grafting compared

Every technique straightens the penis, but each one has its own trade-off. So the table compares the options using the published guideline figures.

Simple plication

How it works: Stitches fold the longer side without cutting

Complete straightening: About 94%

Main trade-off: Some loss of length

Modified Nesbit

How it works: A small wedge of sheath is removed and closed

Complete straightening: About 97%

Main trade-off: Some loss of length

Sixteen-dot technique

How it works: Many small stitches spread the shortening

Complete straightening: About 97%

Main trade-off: Stitch knots may be felt early on

Yachia technique

How it works: Small cuts closed crosswise to shorten

Complete straightening: About 96%

Main trade-off: Some loss of length

Grafting

How it works: Lengthens the short side with a graft

Complete straightening: About 81 to 88%

Main trade-off: Higher risk of new erection problems

Which technique suits a congenital curve?

The tissue is healthy and there is no plaque, so plication works very well. That is why Assoc. Prof. Taş uses grafting only in rare cases. If you also have a twist, he corrects it with the same stitches, sometimes with a small rotation of the erectile bodies.

What if erections are also weak?

When the curve comes with erection problems that tablets no longer help, a penile implant can treat both in one operation. In that case, the device straightens and supports the penis. Read more on the penile implant surgery page.

Recovery after penile curvature surgery

Most men find recovery easier than they expected. Even so, swelling and bruising look dramatic in the first days.

Day 1

One night in hospital, light dressing, simple painkillers

Days 2 to 7

Bruising spreads and fades, showers allowed, wound check before you fly

Week 1 to 2

Back to desk work, swelling settles

Weeks 4 to 6

Sex usually allowed again, later after a graft

Month 3

Final shape judged once swelling has fully gone

Follow-up from home

After you fly home, the team stays in touch by video call while you heal. They also tell you when to start gentle stretching, which protects your length and keeps the tissue supple.

risks

Risks and honest limits

Penile curvature surgery carries a low risk in experienced hands. Still, every operation has limits, and you deserve to hear them first.

  • Loss of length: plication shortens the longer side by design. Published series report a loss of 1 to 1.5 cm in 22 to 69 percent of men.

  • Remaining curve: a small residual bend can remain, and a stitch can loosen over time.

  • Numbness: some men feel reduced sensation on the head of the penis, which usually improves.

  • Felt knots: stitch knots may be felt under the skin for a few months.

  • New erection problems: after plication, this occurs in about 4 to 10 percent of men.

How Assoc. Prof. Taş protects your length

He measures your stretched length before and after the correction, so you see the result in numbers. In addition, he plans the stitches to shorten as little as possible. If you cannot afford any loss, he discusses grafting openly, including its higher risk.

cost

How much does congenital penile curvature surgery cost in Turkey?

The cost depends on the technique, because a plication, a graft repair and an implant are very different operations. So Assoc. Prof. Taş gives one written, all-inclusive quote after your examination.

Plication or Nesbit, stay included

Istanbul, Assoc. Prof. Taş: Personal written quote

United States: About $8,000 to $15,000

United Kingdom (private): From about £5,500

Your quote covers surgery, anaesthesia, the hospital stay and follow-up. Moreover, the coordinator arranges transfers and hotel booking, and no extra charges follow later.

Travelling from the US, Canada or the UK

Many men travel because health systems at home often treat curvature surgery as cosmetic. As a result, they face long waits or the full private bill.

Waiting times at home

In England, NHS referral for a congenital curve can take many months, and some areas do not fund it. Meanwhile, US and Canadian men often pay the full private fee. In Istanbul, by contrast, assessment and surgery usually fit into one week.

Before you fly

  • Bring a list of all your medicines, especially blood thinners.

  • Bring any earlier reports from a urologist or ultrasound scan.

  • Plan five to seven days in Istanbul and avoid long flights on the day after surgery.

Back home

You leave with an operation report in English and clear instructions for the coming weeks. So your family doctor can follow your recovery with full information. For more travel advice, read the international patients guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can congenital penile curvature be fixed?

Yes. Surgery straightens it in most men, and plication achieves complete straightening in about 88 to 97 percent.

Can congenital curvature be fixed without surgery?

No. Tablets, injections and traction devices do not shorten the longer side, so surgery is the only lasting correction.

Is penile plication worth it?

For a bend that makes sex difficult, 83 to 94 percent of men report satisfaction. However, some loss of length is likely.

How much length will I lose?

Many men lose 1 to 1.5 cm, and some lose none. Assoc. Prof. Taş measures your length before and after surgery.

How painful is penile curvature surgery?

Pain is usually moderate and settles with simple painkillers. Swelling and bruising look worse than they feel.

What is the difference between Nesbit and plication?

The Nesbit technique removes a small wedge of sheath, while plication folds it with stitches. Both shorten the longer side.

When can I have sex again?

Most men resume sex after four to six weeks. After a graft, the wait is longer.

Can the curve come back?

A congenital curve rarely returns, because there is no active disease. Still, a stitch can loosen and leave a small bend.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

Plan five to seven days, with one night in hospital and a wound check before you fly.

How much does curvature surgery cost in Turkey?

Assoc. Prof. Taş gives a personal written quote after the examination, covering surgery, hospital stay, anaesthesia and follow-up.
