What is a testicular implant?
A testicular implant is a soft prosthesis shaped like a testicle. The surgeon places it inside the scrotum, so an empty side looks full again. In short, it restores appearance and comfort, not hormones or sperm.
Your remaining testicle usually makes enough testosterone and sperm on its own. So the implant changes how you look and feel, while fertility and hormone levels stay as they were.
There is also no deadline. In fact, many men decide on an implant years after their first operation, once they know the change matters to them.
Which situation brings you here?
Men arrive at this page for different reasons. So choose the line closest to yours and jump straight to the answer.
When men choose a testicular implant
The operation is similar in every case. However, timing and planning change with the reason the testicle is missing.
Testicle removed for cancer
Best timing: During the orchiectomy, or after treatment ends
What Assoc. Prof. Taş checks first: A letter from your oncology team
Testicle lost to torsion
Best timing: Once the scrotum fully heals
What Assoc. Prof. Taş checks first: That the other testicle is fixed in place
Injury or severe infection
Best timing: After any infection clears completely
What Assoc. Prof. Taş checks first: Healthy, well-healed scrotal skin
Missing from birth or undescended
Best timing: Any adult age
What Assoc. Prof. Taş checks first: Whether a hidden testicle still needs removal
Both testicles missing
Best timing: Any time, with hormone treatment in place
What Assoc. Prof. Taş checks first: Sizes that suit your build
After testicular cancer
Cancer is the most common reason for an implant. Usually, the surgeon removes the testicle through the groin, so an implant can go in through the same incision. Otherwise, Assoc. Prof. Taş places it later, once your cancer team agrees.
Chemotherapy or radiotherapy does not rule out an implant. Still, most surgeons wait until treatment ends and the skin recovers.
After torsion or an undescended testicle
After torsion, surgeons normally fix the remaining testicle so it cannot twist. If that step never happened, Assoc. Prof. Taş can do both in one operation. Similarly, an adult with a testicle still in the groin first needs a check, because an undescended testicle carries a higher cancer risk.
Silicone gel or saline: which implant is right for you?
Two implant types exist, and they differ mainly in feel. Here is how they compare in daily life.
Feel
Silicone gel implant: Soft, closest to natural tissue
Saline-filled implant: Slightly firmer
Size
Silicone gel implant: Chosen from set sizes before surgery
Saline-filled implant: Filled to volume during surgery
Availability
Silicone gel implant: Turkey, the UK, Europe and many other countries
Saline-filled implant: Worldwide, and the only type approved in the US
Suits
Silicone gel implant: Most men who want the most natural feel
Saline-filled implant: Men who prefer to fine-tune volume
Why US patients often travel for silicone
In the United States, the FDA has approved only a saline-filled testicular implant. So men who want the softer silicone gel type often have the operation abroad. In Istanbul, you can choose either type after an honest talk about feel and size.
How the size is chosen
Bigger does not look better. Instead, Assoc. Prof. Taş compares your other testicle with sizing models and picks the closest match. Moreover, an oversized implant can feel uncomfortable and raises the risk of problems.
A scrotum that stayed empty for many years may only fit a smaller implant at first. Even so, a modest size still restores a more natural outline.
Who is a good candidate?
Good candidates are healthy adult men with fully healed scrotal skin and no active infection. In addition, they have a clear wish to change how the scrotum looks or feels.
Some men should wait a little longer. For example, a man still in cancer treatment, or one with an open wound, plans surgery once that phase ends.
Smoking: stop at least four weeks before surgery, because smoking slows healing.
Diabetes: good sugar control lowers the risk of infection.
Blood thinners: your own doctor supervises a short pause before the operation.
Expectations: the goal is a balanced look, not a perfect copy of a natural testicle.
Your testicular implant in Istanbul, step by step
Most men stay in Istanbul for four to five days. Also, most of the recovery happens comfortably at home.
01
Examination and sizing
First, Assoc. Prof. Taş examines the scrotum and any remaining testicle. Then he selects the implant size and type with you. Routine blood tests follow on the same day.
02
Your written plan
Next, you agree on the incision, the anaesthesia and the implant. Also, he explains the risks and confirms your price in writing.
03
Day-case surgery
Under general anaesthesia or sedation, he makes a small cut in the groin crease or high on the scrotum. He then places the implant low, where a natural testicle sits, and secures it.
04
Recovery and flight home
You rest at your hotel the same day. After a wound check, you fly home with written instructions and a direct contact for questions.
Recovery after a testicular implant
Recovery is usually quick, because the operation involves a small incision. Here is a typical timeline.
Day 1
Home or hotel the same day; supportive underwear and cold packs
Days 2 to 5
Mild swelling and soreness; simple pain relief; wound check before your flight
Week 1
Desk work and walking again
Weeks 2 to 4
No cycling, gym or heavy lifting
About week 4
Sex and sport usually allowed again
Months 2 to 3
The implant settles into its final position
The implant itself has no feeling. However, the scrotal skin around it keeps its normal sensation.
What are the risks of a testicular implant?
Most men recover without problems. Still, every implant carries risks, so honest information matters before you decide.
Infection: uncommon, but an infected implant usually needs removal and a new one later.
Bleeding: a collection of blood in the scrotum can cause swelling in the first days.
Position: the implant can move upward, which a fixing stitch helps prevent.
Feel: some men notice that the implant feels firmer than a natural testicle.
Erosion: rarely, the implant pushes through thin skin and needs removal.
To lower these risks, the team gives an antibiotic before surgery and works with strict sterile technique. In addition, the right size reduces discomfort and movement.
Replacing an older or poorly fitting implant
Some men already have an implant but dislike its size, position or firmness. For example, older implants can sit high in the scrotum or feel hard.
In that case, Assoc. Prof. Taş removes the old implant and places a better-matched one. Moreover, he can create a lower pocket, so the new implant sits where a natural testicle would.
A softer silicone gel implant often solves the firmness complaint. So bring the details of your current implant, if you have them.
How much does a testicular implant cost in Turkey?
Your price depends on the implant type, one or both sides and whether you combine another procedure. So Assoc. Prof. Taş gives you a personal written quote after the examination.

Planning your trip from the US, Canada or the UK
A testicular implant suits a short trip, because it is a day-case operation. Most men fly from New York, Toronto or London and spend four to five days in Istanbul.
What to bring
The operation notes from your orchiectomy or earlier surgery.
After cancer, a short letter from your oncologist confirming surgery is fine.
The details of any current implant, and a list of your medicines.
On the flight home
The implant contains no metal, so airport scanners do not react to it. On a long flight, wear loose clothing and walk the aisle often. Finally, a review follows around day 7 to 10, by video or with your local doctor.
Men who also plan another procedure can combine both in one trip. For instance, see the penile implant page or the international patients guide.
Questions to ask before an implant abroad
A good surgeon welcomes these questions, so ask them early. In fact, clear answers tell you more than any brochure.
Which implant types and sizes do you offer? A surgeon with several sizes in stock can match your other side.
Where will the incision be? A groin crease or high scrotal cut hides the scar best.
How will you keep the implant low? Ask how the surgeon secures it in position.
What happens if an infection appears at home? Agree on the plan before you travel.
Who follows me up after I fly home? Make sure you have written records and a direct contact.

Frequently asked questions
Does a testicular implant feel real?
It feels close to natural tissue, especially a silicone gel implant. However, it can feel slightly firmer, and some men notice this by touch.
Will an implant affect my testosterone or fertility?
No. The implant only restores appearance. Your remaining testicle, or hormone treatment if both are missing, looks after testosterone.
Can I have an implant years after losing a testicle?
Yes. There is no deadline, and many men have the operation years later.
Can the implant go in during my cancer surgery?
Often, yes, through the same groin incision. With cancer, however, the timing is a joint decision with your oncology team.
Why is silicone gel not available in the US?
The FDA has approved only a saline-filled testicular implant. So US men who want silicone gel usually have surgery abroad.
How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
Plan for about four to five days. Most men go home the same day and fly after a wound check.
Will the scar be visible?
The incision sits in the groin crease or high on the scrotum. So underwear usually hides it, and it fades to a thin line.
How long does a testicular implant last?
It is designed as a permanent implant. You only need a new one after a problem such as infection, or if you want a different size.
Is an MRI scan safe with an implant?
Yes. The implant contains no metal. Still, tell the radiographer, because it shows on the images.
When can I have sex again?
Most men wait about four weeks. Your surgeon confirms that the wound has healed before you start.
